WHAT IS MEDITATION?

Is it a technique that can be practiced?

Is it an effort that you have to do?

Is it something which the mind can achieve?

The answer is NO.

All that the mind can do cannot be meditation – it is something beyond the mind, the mind is absolutely helpless there. The mind cannot penetrate meditation; where mind ends, meditation begins. This has to be remembered, because in our life, whatsoever we do, we do through the mind; whatsoever we achieve, we achieve through the mind. And then, when we turn inwards, we again start thinking in terms of techniques, methods, doings, because the whole of life’s experience shows us that everything can be done by the mind. Yes- except meditation, everything can be done by the mind. Everything is done by the mind except meditation. Because meditation is not an achievement – it is already the case, it is your nature. It has not to be achieved; it has not only to be recognized, it has only to be remembered. It is there waiting for you – just a turning in, and it is available. You have been carrying it always and always.

Meditation is a single lesson of awareness, of no-thought, of spontaneity, of being total in your action, alert, aware. It is not a technique, it is a knack. Either you get it or you don’t.“Osho

MEDITATION FAQS
WHEN SHOULD I MEDITATE?

Best time to meditate is in early morning before sunrise (Bramh bela). It is the time when divine energy is at its peak. Also mind is free from stress and tension. And after good sleep, thoughts are also less.

But there are not set rules, one can sit in meditation whenever one feels like.Once I was walking in street and suddenly I felt huge energy falling on me. I could not stand and sat on roadside without any hitch. There I went in Samadhi.

So formula is best time is when you feel ok to sit in meditation but do it daily.

HOW SHOULD I SIT?

Ideal way is to sit on a mat or carpet with cross legged with your spine straight and eyes closed. Either it should be Siddhasana or Padmasana with your hands in lap or on your knees. But If you can not sit cross legged then You can sit with legs stretched straight or on a chair as you feel comfortable.

Formula here is that your spine and head should be straight and eyes should be closed.

WHERE SHOULD I MEDITATE & HOW?

Best place to meditate is some holy place, your house or even your office, park or any quiet place.

Avoid meditating near a grave yard, a bar, a brothel or a butcher house. When we meditate our safety field opens up and there are chances that we catch negative thoughts or attract negative entities.

It is ideal is to meditate in same designated area in your house everyday. Also try to wear same clothes everyday. Same place and same clothes absorbs the energy when you meditate and become charged. So it helps you to go faster in meditative state.

Create a beautiful and halcyon atmosphere so that you feel delighted each time you step into it.

Also, attending a group meditation will strengthen your state of silence. As you grow in meditation, you will find yourself at peace no matter where you are.

HOW LONG SHOULD I MEDITATE?

When we start meditation it takes time to settle our thoughts and find special silence inside. So ideally one should meditate for fifty to sixty minutes. But not everyone can sit for so long in the beginning, so one can start with 30 minutes at least. For children and old aged it could be fifteen minutes.

CHILDREN & MEDITATION

Children are best canditates. Their mind is not cluttered and has less thoughts so they can go in deep meditation much faster. But they should not be forced to sit. Also, session of meditation should not be too long for them. Just fifteen to thirty minutes is ok and technique should not be too hard for them to do.

DO I NEED TO CHANGE MYSELF?

There is no need to change your eating habits or lifestyle. Just start doing meditation, gradually and automatically what is not needed will go away from your life. Habits will change when peace and bliss enter your life. Internal changes will reflect in external life also.

Avoid doing things in excess, don’t drink too much to have hangover or eat too heavy food, especially before meditation.

IS MUSIC HELPFUL IN MEDITATION?

Music is very helpful in meditation especially for beginners who aren’t used to focus on breathing or find it hard to calm thoughts. It helps you to focus and shift your attention from worries and problems.Though many people don’t need or can’t meditate with music on but it helps a lot for beginners or those who can’t concentrate.

There are some ragas which can stimulate the subtle energy system within you and take you to effortless meditative state.

HOW TO LEARN MEDITATION?

Our mind keeps us engaged to prevent us from being thoughtless and to be what we really are. So to reach that state we need meditation. There are many techniques, some are simple and some difficult. Though one can close his eyes and sit in any meditation he likes but it is advisable to consult and take guidance of a Sadguru. It will help a lot in making your journey easy, safe and fast.

If you are going to climb Everest either you can go alone or with a guide who has already climbed the peak for multiple times (so he is familiar with the surroundings) or you can go at your own. Choice is yours and consequences you face will also be yours.

Meditation is about being present in the moment. It’s really about finding what works for you!

Again, you can incorporate meditation into your life without taking time out of your schedule. Your life can become a meditation. It is those moments throughout the day that we are fully present in the moment that matter.
